I just found out a very close friend of mine has hep C and is going for treatment next week. He had a biopsy several weeks ago and the doctor has told him that he has to take a pill twice a day and an injection for 6 weeks/treatment -. He also says that the doctor has indicated - after a 6-week treatment, it is possible the disease will go into remission and may be cured? Does anyone know any information about treatment, and remission, and what I should expect when he is undergoing treatment. What else can I do to help him out other than offer encouragement and emotional support?? Any information you can provide will be great! Thanks!

It is at least a six month treatment, not six weeks. Actually most people are on treatment for a year, unless they have genotype 2 which is more responsive to the drugs and requires a shorter period of treatment. The interferon injections and ribavirin pills are a mild form of chemotherapy, so it is likely he will be very fatigued and achy during this time. It is also possible that he may have some depression, as that is a side effect of the interferon, but hopefully his doctor is on top of things and will start him on an antidepressant prior to treatment. He will need to drink a lot of water to flush the meds through his system; that will help the nausea. He should eat little meals, and try to exercise mildly- just walking or something like that. You are a good, supportive friend to be asking these questions. The best thing you (and he) can do is to educate yourselves so you know about the disease and the treatment. He should be getting support %26amp; information from a support group if at all possible, because research shows that people who attend a support group adhere better to the treatment plan, thus improving their chances of a successful treatment. Best wishes to you and your friend.
